‘Communism is the virus. COVID-19 is how it spreads’: partisan epistemology and the medical freedom movement

The COVID-19 pandemic saw the implementation of public health measures that caused significant disruption to daily life. Consequently, these were met with widespread resistance. It was argued this resistance driven by anti-scientific attitudes, as individuals refused comply mask mandates and lockdowns, later resisted vaccination efforts. This article asks whether is an accurate characterisation those challenging efforts combat pandemic. To address question, draws on fieldwork at medical freedom rallies. These rallies explicitly organised challenge policies aimed containing spread COVID-19. primary finding rather than being a conflict between pro- forces, instead largely stemmed from who can properly lay claim mantle science. Attendees questioned legitimacy science justifying limitations their personal liberty suggested extra-scientific concerns such desire for political control had compromised objectivity experts. work contributes ongoing debates concerning institutional trust role expertise in democratic governance.
